From the heart of South Central Los Angeles, Khai’s story is rooted in family, creativity, and the power of expression.
Growing up, family played a major role in her life. There was always a cookout, family reunion, or block party around the corner. Some of her favorite memories were made during those gatherings—moments filled with laughter, connection, and the kind of experiences that can only be understood by the people who were there. Those moments became a meaningful part of her upbringing and continue to stay with her today.
Before music became part of her journey, Khai found her creative outlet through writing. She spent her time creating short stories, developing characters, and building storylines from her imagination. Looking back, she sees those early years as the foundation of her love for storytelling. The arts always felt natural to her, whether it was writing, music, or performing. She was drawn to anything that allowed people to express themselves authentically.
Many of the things that influence her music today were already present throughout her upbringing—storytelling, music, family, and real-life experiences. Those influences naturally helped shape the artist she would become.
Khai began making music around the age of 18 or 19. In the beginning, she would take songs she enjoyed, rap over different beats, and put her own spin on them. It was something she genuinely loved doing and served as a creative outlet. She enjoyed challenging herself to take an idea and make it her own.
As time passed, music evolved from something she did for fun into something much bigger. She began releasing music, performing, and connecting with listeners through her art. What started as a passion eventually became a journey she never expected, and one she continues to enjoy every step of the way.
When it comes to musical influences, Ms. Lauryn Hill remains one of the most important. What always stood out to Khai was the purpose behind her music. There was always a story, a message, and substance behind the songs while still creating records people could enjoy. Khai’s first release was inspired by Lauryn Hill, making her continued influence feel like a full-circle moment.
Beyond Lauryn Hill, Khai grew up listening to underground rap and battle rap. She was drawn to the confidence, wordplay, delivery, and storytelling that artists brought to their music. Those influences still impact her work today and play a major role in why her sound naturally blends singing and rap. She also developed a deep appreciation for soul music, which she considers timeless. No matter the genre, the music that resonates with her most is music that makes people feel something and continues to connect with listeners years later.
Khai describes her sound as a blend of R&B, Neo-Soul, and Rap. More than anything, she wants her music to feel relatable and unapologetic. One thing she hears often is that listeners feel like she is speaking directly to their experiences or expressing thoughts they have never said out loud themselves.
That perspective is deeply connected to her identity as an artist. She has never been afraid to say what she feels, whether the topic is love, relationships, growth, confidence, or simply calling a situation exactly what it is. Her goal is to create music that feels honest and real. If listeners hear her music and feel understood, then she believes she has done her job.
Most of the music she has released has been recorded throughout Los Angeles. Over the years, she has worked in professional studios, home setups, and even recorded sessions in her garage. The location was never the priority. The focus was always on creating and sharing the music. Along the way, she has collaborated with talented producers, engineers, and artists, and each experience has contributed to her growth as an artist.
Outside of music, many of Khai’s favorite memories come from spending time with friends and family. Growing up, she often found herself at friends’ houses where someone was always hosting a party, barbecue, or celebration. She also spent plenty of time at the park during Summer Night Lights alongside close friends and cousins. For her, it was never really about one specific location. It was about being surrounded by good people and good energy.
Khai’s most recent release is “Red Rover,” which was released on May 12 and is available on all streaming platforms. Inspired by the childhood game, the record puts its own twist on a familiar concept. Filled with confidence and personality, it represents a side of herself she was excited to share with listeners.
Looking ahead, Khai has no plans of slowing down. She is currently working on new music and several collaborations that she is excited to release. Collaborating with other artists has pushed her outside of her comfort zone as a writer and encouraged her to explore different creative approaches. Some songs lean further into her R&B side, while others tap more into her rap influences. For her, collaboration is an opportunity to continue growing and discovering new sides of herself as an artist.
As she continues her journey, Khai remains grateful for everyone who has supported her along the way. She gives thanks to God, her family, and everyone who has listened to and supported her music. She also gives a special shoutout to LB The Producer for producing “Red Rover” and helping bring the record to life. She credits the many producers, engineers, artists, and creatives she has worked with over the years for helping shape her growth and experiences.
Most importantly, Khai remains focused on creating music that is honest, relatable, and meaningful. With new music on the horizon and more stories to tell, her journey is still unfolding, and she is embracing every moment of it.
