Raised by hardworking parents, DXPE grew up in a household where discipline, faith, and music were all important parts of everyday life. His mother played a major role in nurturing his creativity from an early age. She kept him involved in church, where he sang in the choir and developed a deep connection to music. Starting at just five years old, he took drum and piano lessons, building skills that would stay with him for years to come.
Music wasn’t simply a hobby—it became a way of life. Throughout middle school and high school, he remained active in marching band and wind ensembles, continuing his musical education all the way through college. His dedication carried him to Tennessee State University, where he graduated in 2021 after years of balancing academics and a lifelong passion for music.
Although music had always been around him, DXPE didn’t begin recording his own songs until he was around 20 or 21 years old. By then, he had already spent years studying music, performing, and developing his understanding of sound. Recording gave him a new outlet to express his own stories and experiences.
Like many artists, his inspiration came from the music that moved him during his formative years. In high school, Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book made a lasting impact on him and opened his eyes to new creative possibilities. Later, during his freshman year of college, WESTSIDE BOOGIE became his favorite lyricist. Along with artists such as J. Cole, JID, and Isaiah Rashad, they helped shape the direction of his artistry and encouraged him to pursue music seriously.
Today, DXPE describes his sound as cinematic. Storytelling sits at the center of everything he creates, allowing listeners to experience his music like scenes unfolding in a film. Drawing inspiration from hip-hop, gospel, R&B, and other genres, he blends different influences into a style that feels both personal and immersive.
Most of the music in his catalog has been recorded in Memphis, the city he proudly calls home. The only exception is his first project, which was primarily recorded in Nashville. Those experiences helped him grow as an artist while staying connected to the roots that continue to inspire his work.
His most recent release, THE SPRING’S SOLILOQUY, represents another step forward in his artistic journey. The project showcases his evolving sound and commitment to authentic storytelling. Fans can also expect more music soon, as DXPE plans to release several new singles before the summer comes to an end.
As he reflects on his journey, DXPE is quick to acknowledge the people who helped him along the way. First and foremost, he gives thanks to Jesus Christ and God for guiding him throughout his life and career. He also credits his brother Devin for constantly encouraging him to make music, even when he needed that extra push.
