Growing up in Washington, D.C., Miss Kaniyah learned early on that life wouldn’t always follow a traditional path. Raised without a conventional family structure, she found strength and support in the friendships she built along the way. Those friends became her chosen family, shaping the way she views loyalty, relationships, and conflict.
Her stage name has a story of its own. As a child, one of her teachers would respectfully call her “Miss Kai.” Years later, she used the nickname for her MySpace account, and over time it evolved into the name the world knows today: Miss Kaniyah.
Long before music became her career, performance was already a major part of her life. In the fifth grade, she was recruited into the ballroom scene and joined a house, opening the door to a world of creativity and expression. What started as a childhood opportunity turned into more than a decade of experience in performing, dancing, and acting. Those years helped build the confidence and stage presence that would later become a defining part of her artistry.
Growing up in the hood of Washington, D.C., Miss Kaniyah always knew she wanted a future in the arts. She dreamed of attending the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, but access to those traditional opportunities wasn’t always available. Instead of letting circumstances stop her, she taught herself. Using tools like GarageBand, she learned how to create music on her own, turning determination into skill.
Her biggest inspirations were two powerhouse performers: Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj. Their confidence, creativity, and ability to command attention motivated her to find her own voice and develop her own style.
As her passion grew, she took her talents to the next level through Models Inc., a respected organization in the D.C. area. There, she received professional training in media, performance, and brand development. The experience opened new doors and helped her secure professional dancing opportunities alongside artists such as Trina and Remy Ma.
Her breakthrough moment came when she released a cover of Craig Mack’s classic “Flavor in Ya Ear.” The performance quickly went viral on Twitter, introducing her talent to a much larger audience. Rather than treating it as a one-time success, she used the momentum to continue building her platform. She consistently released freestyles that showcased her versatility and creativity, including standout tributes to Michael Jackson and Prince that earned significant attention from fans online.
In 2020, Miss Kaniyah officially stepped into the spotlight as a recording artist with the release of her debut project, Love It Or Hate It. The project introduced listeners to her unique perspective and established her as an artist with something meaningful to say.
She continued her growth with the release of her EP, Be For Real, in 2025, further proving her ability to evolve while staying true to herself.
Today, Miss Kaniyah continues pushing forward with her latest single, Ain’t Got Time, available now on all streaming platforms. Her journey is a testament to resilience, self-belief, and the power of creating opportunities when none seem available. From the ballroom scene of Washington, D.C., to viral moments and original music releases, Miss Kaniyah has built her career on authenticity—and she’s only getting started.
