Born in Canada to Grenadian parents, Jay spent his early childhood surrounded by Caribbean culture and the sounds of the islands. When he was 10 years old, his life took a major turn as he moved to Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, a neighborhood known for its toughness, resilience, and strong sense of community.
Growing up in Brownsville came with challenges, but it also helped shape the person and artist he would become. During his high school years, Jay faced one of the most difficult moments of his life when he lost his mother. The loss deeply impacted him, and not long after, he experienced a period of homelessness. Those hardships forced him to grow up quickly and learn how to keep moving forward on his own.
Before fully committing to music, Jay spent much of his time playing basketball. The sport gave him an opportunity to build a stronger relationship with his father and provided structure during his younger years. But as time passed, he realized his true passion was elsewhere.
Music had actually been a part of his life since elementary school. He remembers writing raps at a young age and even performing them in front of his classmates after a teacher encouraged him to share his talent. Those early moments planted the seeds for what would later become his career.
Outside of music, Jay also developed a strong interest in fashion while attending high school in SoHo. Being surrounded by creativity, style, and culture helped influence his artistic identity and gave him another outlet for self-expression.
As his passion for music grew, so did his commitment. Jay made sacrifices that many people would never see. There were times when he chose to spend money on studio sessions instead of basic necessities because he believed in investing in his future. For him, creating music wasn’t optional—it was something he felt called to do.
Today, Jay Swishes describes his sound as melodic with heavy bars, blending sharp lyricism with memorable melodies. His influences range from artists like Drake and Tory Lanez to the timeless music of Bob Marley, along with the reggae and soca sounds rooted in his West Indian upbringing. That combination gives his music a unique identity that bridges multiple cultures and styles.
His journey has also led to meaningful industry connections. One notable collaboration came with Kranium through a Def Jam connection. Along the way, Jay has continued to build relationships through networking and positive energy, including opportunities to connect with artists such as BIA. He believes that relationships are just as important as talent when it comes to building a lasting career.
For Jay Swishes, success is built on three things: consistency, work ethic, and relationships. Those principles have helped him continue pushing forward regardless of the obstacles placed in front of him.
In 2022, he released his album I’m Really Him, a project that further showcased his growth as an artist and storyteller. Now, he continues that momentum with his latest single, Born 2 Win, available on all streaming platforms.
