Les J’s Testimony: Turning Pain, Growth, and Redemption Into Music

Growing up in Tacoma, Washington’s Hilltop neighborhood, Les J experienced life during a time when gang violence and drug activity surrounded his community. While he stayed involved in school and sports, he was also living a different reality behind the scenes. Although his father was physically present, the lack of an emotional connection left him searching for acceptance in all the wrong places. That search eventually led him into cliques, drugs, and risky decisions that nearly cost him everything.

His life changed after a near-fatal encounter with laced drugs. What could have been the end became the beginning of a new chapter. Les J describes the experience as a spiritual awakening and credits God’s mercy for saving his life and giving him a new direction. That moment became the foundation of the man and artist he is today.

Les J began making music at just 14 years old. Inspired by a wide range of artists, he grew up listening to legends like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, 2Pac, E-40, Westside Connection, Michael Jackson, Prince, Jodeci, and Jagged Edge, while also drawing inspiration from gospel greats including Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, and Hezekiah Walker. The combination of hip-hop, R&B, and gospel helped shape both his sound and his purpose.

Today, Les J describes his music as authentic faith-based West Coast hip-hop. His records blend hard-hitting production with melodic storytelling and messages built on faith, hope, redemption, and real-life experiences. Rather than hiding his past, he uses it as a testimony, sharing stories of struggle, growth, and transformation. His mission is to create music that connects with hip-hop fans while encouraging listeners to believe that no situation is beyond God’s ability to restore.

Most of Les J’s music has been recorded in Los Angeles, California, where he has continued developing his craft. Every record reflects his commitment to excellence while remaining true to his faith and the message he wants to share with the world.

Outside of music, Les J spent much of his youth at familiar Tacoma landmarks like Narrows Bowling Alley, Tower Lanes, Frisko Freeze, the People’s Center, the Fish House, and throughout the Hilltop neighborhood alongside friends and family. Those experiences continue to influence the authenticity found throughout his music.

His latest release, “God Did It,” is available now on all streaming platforms, along with an official music video. The record stands as a powerful reminder of his personal journey and the faith that carried him through life’s darkest moments. The song was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Jovan Dawkins, adding another milestone to Les J’s growing catalog.

As he continues his journey, Les J gives all glory to God for changing his life and making his purpose possible. His testimony remains at the heart of every song he creates, proving that redemption is real and that even the hardest chapters can lead to something greater.
