Growing up in Harlem, New York, Statz was surrounded by a culture that shaped every part of who he is today. Harlem gave him confidence, style, pride, and a deep appreciation for the stories that live on every block. Music wasn’t something he discovered later in life—it was already part of his family history.
His grandfather, Robert Carr, was a member of the popular 1950s doo-wop group Robert & Johnny, giving Statz a direct connection to music long before he ever stepped into a studio. Watching how music could bring people together, capture emotion, and become part of a family’s identity planted a seed that would eventually grow into his own creative journey.
For more than 14 years, Statz has been building his craft as an artist, songwriter, producer, and engineer. Much of that journey came through teaching himself. He learned how to write songs, record himself, produce beats, and shape records from the ground up. Instead of waiting for opportunities, he created them, developing every skill needed to turn an idea into music that people could genuinely connect with.
His biggest influences each left their own mark on his artistry. 50 Cent inspired his confidence, hunger, and unmistakable New York attitude. Kanye West showed him that creativity had no limits and that soulful music could still be bold, experimental, and deeply relatable. Jay-Z became an example of lyricism, intelligence, business, and storytelling, while Musiq Soulchild introduced him to the power of vulnerability, melody, and honest songwriting. Together, those influences helped shape an artist who values authenticity above everything else. Statz has always been drawn to artists with unmistakable identities—people who create entire worlds around their music rather than simply releasing songs.
That mindset is reflected throughout his own sound. His music blends soulful melodies with classic New York hip-hop while adding modern and alternative influences. Sample-driven production, nostalgic textures, clever lyricism, smooth hooks, and emotional honesty all play a role in his records. Some songs lean into gritty boom-bap, others embrace melody and vulnerability, while some are fueled purely by energy. No matter the direction, every record comes from real experiences. A major chapter of Statz’s journey was spent at Levelz Recordings, a studio he proudly calls a hidden gem in New York City. Alongside Roctimus Prime and Jay Ave, he developed not only his technical abilities but also his identity as a creator. Surrounded by a collective of talented artists, producers, and engineers known as the Levelz Crew, everyone pushed one another to improve. They traded knowledge, shared opportunities, and spent countless nights creating together. Those sessions taught Statz how to engineer his own records while reinforcing that making music is about building complete worlds—not simply recording songs.
One record that perfectly represents his artistry is “GANGSTALUV” from his EP LOVE/LIFE. Written, performed, and recorded entirely by Statz, the song captures his ability to balance vulnerability with confidence while showcasing the soulful, melodic style that defines his music.
Outside of the studio, New York itself became one of his greatest influences. As a kid, his world revolved around neighborhood blocks, parks, corner stores, train stations, basketball courts, and simply being outside with the people around him. Times Square was one of the first places that left a lasting impression, with its nonstop energy, bright lights, and constant movement. As he got older, places like Apt. 78, Fort Tryon Park, Fat Cat, Union Square, Washington Heights, and Uptown became extensions of home. Those environments shaped his humor, personality, fashion, confidence, and the perspective he brings into every record.
His latest release, “Progress” featuring Phasod, reflects exactly where he is today as an artist. Focused, hungry, and intentional, the record represents his commitment to bringing meaningful lyricism and genuine emotion back into hip-hop. More than making music, Statz wants his work to inspire people to grow, overcome obstacles, and live with purpose.
