Some artists are shaped by their environment. Others use it as motivation to build something greater. Emerging artist Jaidrius from Yakima, Washington, is doing exactly that.
Raised on the east side of Yakima, Jaidrius grew up in a family affected by generations of addiction, violence, prison, and instability. With his mother struggling with drug addiction and his father in and out of prison, life presented challenges at an early age. Instead of allowing those experiences to define him, he found an outlet through music.
At 16 years old, Jaidrius began making music on an iPhone 5. Inspired by artists like Tyler, the Creator and Steve Lacey, who also created beats on their phones, he realized that expensive equipment wasn’t necessary to bring ideas to life. That mindset sparked a creative journey that continues to evolve today.
His musical foundation was built on timeless sounds. Growing up, he was surrounded by classic soul from The Isley Brothers, James Brown, and the DeBarge family, while also embracing ’90s rap legends like DJ Quik, OutKast, 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Spice 1, and E-40. Those influences helped shape a sound that he describes as bass-heavy, funky, soulful, raw, and bouncy.
Most of Jaidrius’ music is created from his home studio, where he taught himself the basics of mixing while producing and recording the majority of his own records. His independent approach has allowed him to stay true to his vision and continue growing with every release.
Back home in Yakima, some of his favorite memories were made at Lions Park near Yakima Valley College, where he grew up just around the corner. Downtown Yakima and Valley Mall were also popular places that became part of his upbringing and the community that helped shape his story.
As he continues pushing forward, Jaidrius has plenty of new music on the way and remains grateful for everyone who has supported his journey. He gives a special shoutout to Daniel Rincon for gifting him his first guitar, to his hometown of Yaktown, to his friend Lucas for standing by him after his move to Seattle, and to everyone who has been solid throughout the years. Most importantly, he gives thanks to his mom, whose impact remains an important part of his story.
