Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma and now residing in Little Rock, Arkansas, Nevin’s story with music started long before he ever considered making it a career. His sound today is shaped by a unique combination of his upbringing, his faith-based childhood, the artists he connected with, and the experiences that came along the way.
Growing up, Nevin was the oldest of four children, with two sisters and a younger brother. His mother and stepfather were devout Christians, and religion played a major role inside their household. Secular music wasn’t allowed, and much of his childhood was spent in church throughout the week and on Sundays.
His parents were strict, and Nevin grew up following the rules and accepting the teachings of his household. He remembers being taught that God, church and the Bible were the foundation of everything. Even when he had questions about things that didn’t make sense to him, the answer was often centered around having faith and not questioning God.
While his upbringing may have limited the music he could listen to at home, it didn’t stop Nevin from eventually finding his own connection to music.
At around eight years old, he began singing in the church choir. That experience opened something up in him, and he knew at an early age that music was something he wanted to be involved with for the rest of his life.
As he got older, his musical world expanded. He gravitated toward artists whose lyrics and musical elements made him feel connected. His influences include some of hip hop’s most recognizable names, including 2Pac, Too Short, Brotha Lynch Hung, The D.O.C., Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, Scarface, The Notorious B.I.G. and MC Hammer.
Those influences helped shape the artist Nevin would eventually become, but his sound would go on to become something uniquely his own.
Nevin describes his music as a hybrid mix of West Coast influence, hip hop and R&B, with elements of the church singing background he grew up around. He can rap, he can sing, and he brings both sides together to create a sound that reflects different parts of his life.
It’s a difficult sound to put into one box, and that’s exactly what makes it stand out.
Nevin has spent years making music whenever he had the opportunity, regardless of where life took him. Although he began taking music professionally about five years ago, creating music has always been something he made time for.
Today, he has continued building his catalog from both Tulsa and Little Rock, recording much of his music at Ferocious Productions in Little Rock and SolRay Studios in Tulsa.
His connection to both cities also represents different chapters of his story. But before the music, there were the places that helped shape his childhood and the memories that came with growing up.
Some of Nevin’s favorite local hangout spots included Tastee Freeze, a food spot that is still open today and was a popular weekend gathering place. Gibbs was another spot where people would spend time, while O’Brien Park was also a familiar place for hanging out.
Those everyday places, experiences and memories become part of an artist’s story, even when they don’t realize it at the time.
Now, Nevin is focused on continuing to build his name and push his music forward.
His most recent release, “Ain’t Gettin Over On Me,” was produced by Ferocious Productions and gives listeners another look into what he brings to the table.
But he’s not slowing down anytime soon.
Nevin has a new single on the way titled “Trust These Hoes,” also produced by Ferocious Productions. He also has a couple of new records with his team that are almost ready to go.
