The Journey of Young Kenway: From Bellflower To The Booth

Emerging from Bellflower, California, Young Kenway is one of the most talented up and coming artist out the city.

Growing up in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood as a kid who is half Black and half Mexican, Kenway faced challenges with acceptance. He experienced bullying from his peers, making his childhood difficult at times. Despite those experiences, he was raised by both of his parents and found comfort in the things he loved most.

Basketball was a major part of his upbringing. He began playing at just five years old and went on to participate in multiple city leagues. Outside of basketball, he enjoyed spending time with his cousins, especially his Mexican cousins, who remained an important part of his life.

Music and creativity were also present from an early age. Kenway grew up listening to Lil Wayne, whose music played a major role in shaping his early musical taste. That changed when he discovered Drake for the first time. The experience opened his ears to a different approach to music and ultimately became a turning point in his musical journey.

His creativity extended beyond music. As a child, Kenway was an avid reader who enjoyed books and writing. He even participated in creative story competitions, developing an appreciation for storytelling that would later become an important part of his music.

At 17, Kenway began making music of his own. Much of his recording took place in Los Angeles, where he continued developing his sound and finding his voice as an artist.

His music carries the influence of Drake’s honesty and melodic approach, alongside the slick talk and unapologetic lyricism of West Coast artist Suga Free. The combination allows him to explore different emotions and perspectives without being confined to one particular sound.

Whether he is reflecting on missing someone, dealing with betrayal, or questioning himself, Kenway brings an honest approach to his music. He can just as easily shift into a more confident, direct delivery, using sharp punchlines and West Coast lyricism to express a completely different attitude.

His most recent album, If You Only Knew 2, reflects the continued development of his artistry. While he currently has no new music available, his journey remains rooted in the experiences and influences that have shaped him.

As he continues forward, Kenway makes sure to recognize the people who have been part of his journey, giving a special shoutout to his cousins Jason and Sebastian for their support along the way.
