OBN Jay grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, primarily raised by his mother, who worked multiple jobs to support the family. Despite the challenges, OBN Jay credits his mother for making sure he and his siblings had what they needed, instilling a sense of gratitude that would later influence his work ethic and drive.
As a child, he was active and athletic, excelling in football, basketball, and track. He won two state titles in track for the 4×1 and 4×4 relays, yet he confesses he was never truly passionate about sports. From a young age, his real focus was music, and he began writing raps as early as first grade. By high school, around 10th or 11th grade, he was serious about his craft, even getting a job to pay for studio time and recording on his own dime.
Growing up in Baton Rouge also meant being surrounded by street life. OBN Jay recalls a neighborhood where “thugging” activities were common, and many people lost family members to gun violence. Despite these hardships, he channeled his experiences into music, transforming the pain and chaos around him into motivation.
OBN Jay began gaining traction around 2018. Showing remarkable determination, he shot six music videos on his 18th birthday, releasing them to promote himself. He credits his early support to God and recognizes the project Lost Hope as a pivotal step in his career, helping him push forward and refine his sound.
Some of his early records—like MISFIT, No Weakness, Slizzard, Big Ole, Chess Not Checkers, Body 4 Body, and Trap Daily—helped him build a growing fanbase and establish his style: raw, authentic, and relentless. Each release showcased his dedication to being a “master of motion,” consistently delivering content and carving his own lane in the industry.
Now, OBN Jay continues to grow as an artist. His latest double-disc album pays homage to Tupac Shakur through its format and title, reflecting both his respect for hip-hop history and his growth in delivery and versatility. His most recent single, Oouuu, highlights his energy and signature sound, signaling that he’s only just getting started.
