Born and raised in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans, artist Ko_17th, originally born Mikorri Reese-Hankton, carries a story shaped by adversity, determination, and the strength to overcome every obstacle placed in front of him.
Growing up, Ko_17th faced challenges at an early age due to his parents’ legal troubles, which led to him being moved around between Texas and Monroe, Louisiana. During those years, he witnessed the harsh realities that many young people face, losing multiple childhood friends to violence and the streets. Those experiences left a lasting impact on him and became part of the foundation behind the person and artist he is today.
Eventually, Ko_17th found stability with a foster family, the Jackson family of New Orleans and Central Louisiana, who played an important role in helping guide him toward a brighter future. With their support, he pursued his passion for football, earning attention from major programs including LSU, the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and the University of Miami. His journey eventually led him to Southern University, where he continued his education and graduated from both Southern University and LSU.
While sports became a major part of his life, music was always a passion that followed him. Ko_17th started creating music at just 7 years old, developing his craft while being influenced by legendary voices and artists such as Nina Simone, Kevin Gates, Juice WRLD, Kilo Cooper, and Tae Coop. His early connection with music became an outlet to express his emotions, experiences, and the lessons he learned throughout his life.
Much of Ko_17th’s music was created in Hollygrove at Icon Studios with Grant and Toren, where he developed his signature sound. Known for his powerful vocal delivery, Ko_17th describes his voice as being projected like an instrument, creating a unique style that separates him from others. His music blends emotion, storytelling, and authenticity, allowing listeners to connect with his personal journey.
His rise in music gained major attention after recording the song “Bryan Williams” outside of Gladys Bar in New Orleans. The record caught the attention of Birdman, leading to Ko_17th securing a distribution-only deal with Cash Money Records.
Before the recognition, some of Ko_17th’s most memorable moments came from the places and people that shaped his childhood. One of his favorite hangout spots was the skating rink on Airline, where he spent time with New Orleans legend Big Choo. He also remembers freestyle sessions by Kermit’s, while his best friend Lorrell Johnson played the trumpet, creating unforgettable moments surrounded by creativity and community.
Ko_17th’s latest album, “The Last Message,” represents a deeper chapter in his life. The project focuses on self-realization, accountability, mental growth, and rebuilding from within. It reflects his journey of understanding his past while continuing to work toward becoming a better version of himself.
Alongside the album, Ko_17th continues to spread positive messages through his music, including his new single “Love,” a record created as an empowering tribute to women.
Through every challenge, transition, and accomplishment, Ko_17th remains connected to the people who helped shape his path.
