OG Spooky Spook: From Paterson Streets to Building the Bread Mafia

Emerging out of Paterson, New Jersey, OG Spooky Spook is one of the most talented up and coming artist out the city. From growing up around the streets to surviving a life-changing shooting and overcoming serious legal battles, his journey has been anything but ordinary. Now, with music, business, and his clothing brand in motion, he’s focused on building his legacy while taking care of his family.

Growing up, Spooky lived with his mother, grandmother, uncle, and two younger brothers. His mother was only 15 years older than him, so their relationship often felt more like a brother-and-sister dynamic, while his grandmother played a major role in raising him. He also looked up to his uncle as a father figure. His uncle was involved in the streets before struggling with addiction, but their bond remained strong. Spooky speaks with love about the people who raised him, recognizing how much he learned from watching them navigate life.

Both his mother and uncle were hustlers, and although they weren’t intentionally teaching him the ins and outs of the streets, he paid attention to everything happening around him. Growing up around people involved in hustling and street life, he absorbed lessons from his surroundings at an early age. Those experiences became part of his understanding of money, survival, and navigating the world.

His childhood also took him throughout Paterson. Because his mother moved apartments frequently, Spooky attended different schools and lived in several parts of the city. That gave him connections across neighborhoods where others might not have had the same relationships. Although some of those areas had tensions with the neighborhood he represents today, he had personal ties to different sides of town. Around the age of 10, he settled in the area he now calls home and began building his own name there.

Even as a child, Spooky carried a strong sense of responsibility. As the oldest brother, he naturally developed a leadership mentality, and people often looked to him to take the lead. He also understood the value of money at an unusually young age, saving whatever he received from relatives and people around the family. By 12, he was already helping contribute to his grandmother’s bills with the money he had saved. He credits those early experiences with teaching him the importance of making money and looking out for the people closest to him.

However, his early years also brought serious consequences. Spooky caught his first charge at just 12 years old after stealing a car. His experiences growing up forced him to learn difficult lessons long before adulthood.

Music had already become part of his life by then. Spooky began rapping around the age of 10, initially performing lyrics written for him by an older cousin. Over time, he developed his skills and began writing his own material. His early musical influences included Master P and No Limit Records, Cash Money and the Hot Boys, Dipset, and The LOX. Their music helped shape his approach and introduced him to different styles of hip-hop that would influence his own sound.

A major turning point came in 2012, when Spooky was shot eight times. The experience changed his perspective and pushed him to take music more seriously. In response, he released “Don’t Come Around My Way,” a diss track directed at the people responsible for the shooting. The situation was especially personal because the individuals involved were people he had grown up around on the opposite side of Paterson. What began as a painful experience became a defining moment in his musical journey, giving him a reason to turn his experiences into records.

His challenges didn’t end there. Spooky later faced attempted murder and murder charges, putting his future at risk as he faced the possibility of 32 years in prison. He ultimately beat the charges, giving him an opportunity to move forward and approach life differently.

Since then, Spooky has focused on making music, taking care of his family, and expanding his business ventures. Beyond recording, he’s built his clothing brand and launched his own record company, Bread Mafia. His entrepreneurial mindset reflects the same drive he developed as a child, when saving money and finding ways to provide were already priorities.

Musically, his career has continued to grow through collaborations with established names, including Lil Durk, Fetty Wap, Coi Leray, and Vado. He’s also released mixtapes with DJ Holiday and toured across 40 states, performing alongside Fetty Wap and Coi Leray. Those experiences have allowed him to bring his music to audiences beyond his hometown and establish a wider presence.

Today, OG Spooky Spook is generating buzz with his latest single, “Up Ya Rank.” With new music, business ventures, and Bread Mafia continuing to develop, he’s focused on keeping his momentum going while building something lasting for himself and his family.
