Out Da Mud: Splurge’s Journey From Chesterfield to the Studio

Raised in the small town of Chesterfield in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, the artist known as Splurge grew up surrounded by strong family values and real-life lessons about perseverance. Raised by his single mother and grandmother alongside his sisters, Splurge learned early on that nothing in life is given — everything must be earned. In a place where many people grow up and remain in the same cycle, his family taught him to make something out of nothing and to believe that the only thing standing between a person and their goals is themselves.

That mindset stayed with him. Even at a young age, Splurge believed he was capable of more than the circumstances around him. Music eventually became his outlet — a way to express his thoughts, his ambition, and his faith. For him, music is not just entertainment; it’s a reflection of the belief that you and God determine who you are and who you become.

Splurge began taking music seriously around the age of 14 or 15. What started as simply experimenting and having fun soon turned into something deeper. As time went on, he realized music was a real passion and something he wanted to perfect. The more he worked at it, the clearer his vision became.

Growing up with older sisters played a big role in shaping his musical taste. Being around them exposed him to a lot of 2000s-era music during his early years. Artists like Lil Wayne, Gorilla Zoe, Gucci Mane, Busta Rhymes, Migos, and Future were some of the voices that influenced him. What stood out most was how each of them had their own unique sound and identity. Watching how they built their careers and created their own lanes left a lasting impression on him.

Today, Splurge describes his music as high-energy, aggressive Southern trap that stays authentic to who he is. While his sound has evolved over time, he says he truly discovered his voice after stepping away from music for a period and returning with a clearer focus and renewed drive.

Much of the music he has released so far was recorded at Audio Box Studios in Charlotte, North Carolina — a respected studio known for its connection to DaBaby’s Billion Dollar Baby movement. The studio has also hosted artists like Stunna 4 Vegas and other notable names from the Charlotte music scene. Recording in that environment helped Splurge take his craft more seriously and sharpen his sound. He also credits his engineer, Juan — also known as True Dream Juan — as a key part of the recording process and the development of his music.

Despite working in larger studios now, Splurge’s roots remain tied to the small-town life he came from. Growing up in Chesterfield meant spending time with friends wherever people gathered — late-night kickbacks out in the fields around 2 a.m. or hanging out at Craig Park, spots locals know well.

His most recent release, the single “From Da Carolinas,” is a direct reflection of those roots. The record represents the culture and energy he grew up around and shines a light on a region he believes doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. Through the song, Splurge aims to showcase both where he comes from and the kind of music he brings to the table.

Looking ahead, he says there’s much more on the way. Splurge has been spending a lot of time in the studio building his catalog and preparing new releases. Fans can expect more motivational street music with a strong Carolina influence. He also hinted at collaborations with some bigger artists, though he’s keeping the details under wraps for now. New singles and visuals are also expected to drop soon.

Along the journey, Splurge gives credit to ODM LLC — his brand and business. Creating his own LLC has been a major step in taking control of his career, allowing him to focus on both the creative and business sides of the industry. ODM, which stands for “Out Da Mud,” represents the grind behind everything he’s building. To him, it’s more than just a label — it’s a movement and a mindset that reflects where he started and the work it takes to keep moving forward.
