The Heart Behind the Music: The Story of Young Lyric

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Young Lyric has been connected to music from an early age. The oldest of three siblings, Lyric grew up surrounded by family members who understood the music world and encouraged her to find her own voice.

Her mother gave her the name Lyric after feeling a strong sense of divine inspiration. She believed the name was connected to her daughter’s destiny and that Lyric was meant to become a star. Her father later gave her the name “Young Lyric,” a fitting name for a young artist who began making her mark at an early age.

Lyric started rapping when she was just 10 years old. She was already creating videos and taking her music seriously while most kids her age were still figuring out what they wanted to do. Her father and uncle played an important role in those early years, supporting her ambitions and helping create an environment where she could develop her talent. Her family was involved in music themselves, and they even had a home studio where Lyric could record with her cousins.

That support came with discipline. Her parents encouraged her to pursue music, but they also made sure she understood the importance of responsibility, focus and balance. They allowed her the freedom to chase her goals while keeping her grounded and aware of what came with building a career at such a young age.

By the time she was 15, Lyric had already reached a major turning point. She appeared on The Rap Game, gaining national exposure and introducing herself to a much wider audience. The reality competition became an important launching pad for her public career, giving viewers a closer look at the young Houston rapper and her potential.

Behind the scenes, her parents remained heavily involved in helping guide her career. At 15, Lyric was presented with a contract opportunity from Jermaine Dupri, but her parents advised her to turn it down because they did not believe the terms were right for her. Their involvement helped Lyric navigate an industry that can be difficult to understand, especially when entering it at such a young age.

Rather than allowing one opportunity to define her career, Lyric continued building on her own terms. Over the years, she released six projects, continuing to develop as an artist and songwriter. Her catalog includes Princess from 2016, #Bossmoves from 2019, and Pretty and Highly Favored, her 2023 collaborative project with Taylor McCants.

Throughout her journey, Lyric has delivered records such as “U Got Dragged,” “WipeOut,” “Yummy,” “Jealousy,” “First Things First,” “Am I Your Baby?” and more. Each chapter has added to a career that started when she was only 10 years old.

Now, Young Lyric continues that journey with her latest single, “Late Night,” currently available on all streaming platforms.
