Brooklyn, New York artist and producer Laila! has always known music was the path she wanted to follow. From an early age, she never imagined herself becoming anything other than a musician. Growing up, she immersed herself in music through musical theater and band, laying the foundation for what would become a promising career.
Raised by a supportive family, Laila! was encouraged to chase her passion without hesitation. Her parents never questioned her dream of making music, giving her the confidence to believe she could accomplish anything she set her mind to. Along the way, she also earned the nickname “Baby Genius,”a name lovingly created by her grandmother, her father, legendary artist Mos Def, and a longtime family friend.
As she entered middle school, her musical taste began to take shape. Artists like Aaliyah, Brandy, and Brent Faiyaz became some of the voices that inspired her creative journey. At just 14 years old, Laila! started producing her own beats using GarageBand while teaching herself how to write songs and develop her sound.
After spending years sharpening her skills behind the scenes, she officially began releasing music at 16. Her debut release quickly found an audience and caught the attention of listeners, proving that her dedication to perfecting her craft was paying off.
Like many young artists, Laila! experienced challenges throughout high school and admits she wasn’t always the easiest student. After graduating, she made the decision to take a gap year and devote all of her time to music. That life-changing decision eventually became the inspiration behind her 2024 debut album, Gap Year!
One of the biggest driving forces behind Laila!’s journey has been her mother. Watching her mother create opportunities on her own inspired Laila! to embrace independence in every aspect of her career. That mindset led her to write and produce Gap Year! entirely by herself, showcasing not only her songwriting but also her production abilities.
Her creativity is fueled by real-life experiences, from navigating the music industry to dealing with loneliness and learning how to complete projects without relying on others. While she prefers to keep many of her musical influences private, she has openly expressed admiration for SZA, whose artistry, kindness, and presence continue to inspire her.
Since releasing Gap Year! in 2024, Laila! has continued building momentum with standout records like “Not My Problem” and “Like That!” Her latest single, “Anything Could Happen,” continues that growth, giving fans another look at the honesty, creativity, and confidence that have quickly made her one of the most exciting young artists to watch.
With talent as both a vocalist and producer, Laila! isn’t following trends—she’s creating her own lane, one release at a time.
