From Fresno to LA: The Story of Kenyon Ray

Born in 1998 in Fresno, California, Kenyon Ray grew up with music and ambition surrounding him long before he ever stepped into a studio. As the youngest of four kids, his early years were shaped by family struggles, constant change, and learning how to adapt at a young age.

At 9 years old, Kenyon moved from Fresno to South Sacramento with just his mother. Growing up in a single-parent household came with challenges, especially without strong male role models around during his younger years. Still, those hardships never pushed him off course. Instead, they taught him independence, resilience, and how to stay focused on building something better for himself.

Living in Northern California exposed him to the energy and culture of the Bay Area. The heavy basslines, party energy, and bounce of the hyphy movement became a major influence on him early on. Later, when he moved to Los Angeles at 15 to live with his father, another side of California music opened his eyes. Surrounded by the sounds of classic West Coast G-funk and the atmosphere of Southern California, Kenyon began developing the foundation for the sound he carries today.

It was during his teenage years in Los Angeles when music started becoming serious.

While attending school, Kenyon began writing rhymes and creating beats on his school tablet, teaching himself through experimentation and passion. Although he started writing songs around 11 years old over popular instrumentals, he officially recorded his first studio song at 23, marking the beginning of his professional journey as an artist.

One of the first artists to truly inspire him was DJ Quik. Kenyon remembers his father giving him a CD player with one of DJ Quik’s albums, and hearing the song “Fandango” left a lasting impression on him. As he got older, artists like Lil Wayne and Kendrick Lamar also played major roles in shaping his lyrical style and creativity.

Today, Kenyon describes his sound as sharp, rhythmic, and filled with raw passion. His music carries elements from both Northern and Southern California, blending smooth West Coast influence with personal storytelling and focused lyricism.

Most of the music he has released so far has been recorded at CitySound, where he continues sharpening his craft and building his catalog. His latest release, Blue Denim, gives listeners another look into his evolving artistry and the experiences that continue to shape him.

Outside of music, many of Kenyon’s teenage memories were built throughout Los Angeles. He spent time around Venice Beach, Crenshaw, and Leimert Park with friends, enjoying the culture and freedom of being young in the city. Whether it was chasing girls at Baldwin Hills Mall or playing basketball at Ladera Park and Norman O. Houston Park near South La Brea, those environments became part of the story and personality behind his music.

Now, with a new EP expected to release this summer, Kenyon Ray continues pushing forward, carrying the influence of every city, struggle, and experience that helped shape him. His journey reflects both sides of California culture while staying true to his own voice, proving that growth, passion, and persistence can create a lane of their own.
