More Than Music: Lique’s Journey of Faith and Resilience

Detroit has always been part of Lique’s identity. Born and raised in Detroit on February 29, 1992, her story began on a leap year—a rare date that, in many ways, mirrors who she is. From the start, there was something distinct about her presence.

As the oldest of seven siblings in a blended family—five girls and two boys—Lique grew up carrying responsibilities far beyond her years. With her mother rooted on Detroit’s west side and her father on the east, she experienced both sides of the city and developed a deep understanding of its culture. That balance became part of who she is: strength and softness, faith and realism, resilience and grace.

Her childhood came with challenges. Due to her mother’s mental health struggles, Lique spent much of her early life moving between family members and households. Despite the instability, those years gave her a unique perspective. Time with her mother centered heavily around church, where faith became a foundation and music became a calling. She sang in the church choir, learning early how music could move people spiritually and emotionally.

Life with her father offered a completely different experience. It was filled with neighborhood memories that defined Detroit summers—running through the streets until the streetlights came on, cooling off under fire hydrants, and enjoying the simple freedom of childhood. Though the environments were different, both shaped her in meaningful ways. Together, they gave her what she describes as the best of both worlds.

By seventh grade, Lique moved in with her father permanently. Around this time, her artistic gifts began to take clearer form. She later attended the prestigious Detroit School of Arts, the same institution that helped nurture the legendary Aaliyah. There, her natural talent found structure and purpose.

Music had already become part of her life by age 10. She began writing gospel songs, starting with simple verses and choruses before evolving into full songs as she got older. By high school, her writing expanded into R&B, blending emotion, storytelling, and melody in ways that felt authentic to her.

Her inspirations reflected both her spiritual upbringing and love for timeless R&B. Artists like Brandy, CeCe Winans, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Toni Braxton, Beyoncé, Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige, and Aaliyah all helped shape her ear and artistic vision.

At Detroit School of Arts, Lique stepped into leadership, becoming both singer and choreographer for her high school group R.E.D. Those early leadership roles revealed the creativity and vision that would continue defining her career. Bigger opportunities soon followed, including performing in a group managed by Mase, which took her beyond Detroit to cities like Atlanta, New York City, and across California.

Outside of music, Detroit’s local landmarks also became part of her story. Places like Belle Isle, the Renaissance Center River Walk, Skateland, Great Skate, Macomb Mall, Butterfly Arcade, and Bob’s Classic Kicks hold memories of laughter, community, and growing up in the city she still proudly calls home.

Today, Lique’s sound reflects every chapter of that journey. She describes her music as soulful, warm, smooth, and spirit-filled—a space where classic R&B meets authentic faith. Her music is designed not only to sound good, but to inspire hope and create genuine connection.

Much of the music she has released has been recorded alongside her hometown producer Joshua Ashton Woods, founder of Creative Minds Coalition. Their creative partnership has helped bring her vision to life while preserving the honesty and heart behind her sound.

On June 26, 2026, Lique released two new records, “No. 1” and “I Do,” giving listeners another glimpse into her evolving artistry. She is now working on a Christian R&B project, with more new music expected this fall.

As an independent artist, Lique knows success is rarely achieved alone. She credits producer Joshua Ashton Woods for believing in her vision and growing alongside her as an artist. She also acknowledges graphic designer Julius Green of 4th Gen Creations, who has helped visually shape her brand from the beginning, along with Dominique and Chantal for their constant emotional and physical support.

Above all, one person continues to motivate her more than anyone else—her son, Amari.

He is her biggest supporter, her deepest inspiration, and the reason she continues pushing forward. Through every challenge, every setback, and every milestone, Lique’s journey has remained rooted in faith, perseverance, and purpose.
