Some artists are born into music, while others discover it through the experiences that shape them. For Filipino singer-songwriter Denise Julia, that journey began in Manila, where she developed a love for performing long before becoming one of today’s voices in R&B.
As a child, Denise spent more time watching MTV than cartoons. Inspired by global superstars like Beyoncé and Shakira, she would perform around the house while dreaming of one day becoming an artist herself. She also found a deep connection to R&B groups like TLC, whose music and representation helped shape both her musical taste and her confidence.
Before pursuing music full-time, Denise was involved in theater and public speaking. She competed in national declamation and extemporaneous speech competitions, experiences that helped sharpen her stage presence and storytelling abilities. Ironically, despite her love for performing, she was naturally shy and rarely sang in front of other people during those early years.
Growing up wasn’t always easy. Denise has spoken openly about feeling pressure to fit certain beauty standards and expectations, while also discovering her identity at a young age during her time at an all-girls school. Those personal experiences would later become a source of strength, helping her create music that feels honest, vulnerable, and relatable.
At just 13 years old, Denise began writing songs, using music as an outlet to express herself. She later started sharing covers and original records online, steadily building an audience before breaking through with her viral hit “NVMD (Never Mind),” which exploded across TikTok and introduced her music to listeners around the world.
Since then, Denise Julia has continued to write from real-life experiences. Songs like “Butterflies”reflect the emotions of modern relationships and situationships, creating music that resonates with a generation navigating love, heartbreak, and everything in between.
Continuing that journey, Denise recently released her brand-new six-track EP, LOVE AGAIN, on July 23, 2026.
