Born in Watts and raised around West Los Angeles and Compton, Yung ELz grew up experiencing different sides of Los Angeles from an early age. While he has connections to multiple parts of the city, West LA has always felt like home and played a major role in shaping the person and artist he would become.
Growing up around different environments, personalities and situations gave Yung ELz plenty to draw from creatively. His music reflects the things he has experienced firsthand — relationships, losses, ambition, life lessons and the process of figuring out how to navigate life. Rather than creating from a distance, he pulls directly from his own experiences and personality.
The block was one of his main hangout spots growing up, but his memories of LA extend far beyond the neighborhood. Oki Dog, the Beverly Center, The Grove and Universal CityWalk were also places he spent time. For Yung ELz, growing up in Los Angeles meant being able to go from the neighborhood to another part of the city all in the same day. Each place became connected to different memories and different stages of his life.
By around 13 years old, music became more than something he simply enjoyed. It was something he naturally gravitated toward, eventually realizing that it could become something he seriously built around.
One of his biggest musical influences growing up was Lil Wayne. Yung ELz was drawn to Wayne’s creativity, confidence and ability to approach every record differently while still maintaining his identity. Whether he was rapping, making melodic records or jumping on someone else’s song, Wayne’s versatility stood out. That influence helped shape Yung ELz’s own approach to music.
Today, Yung ELz describes his sound as West Coast-rooted but versatile. He considers himself a rapper first, but refuses to limit himself to one style. His music can move from straight rap to melodic records, R&B-influenced songs and more commercial sounds depending on the record. The common thread is that every song comes from his real life and personality.
Most of the music he has released so far has been recorded at HMRN. As he continues developing his sound, he has also started working in different studios and with different engineers, expanding his creative circle while preparing for the next chapter.
His latest release, “4AM,” gives listeners another look into what he is building. But Yung ELz makes it clear that the record is only one piece of a much bigger plan. With plenty of unreleased music already recorded, he has been experimenting with different sounds and putting together records that showcase more of his range.
Rather than rushing to release everything at once, Yung ELz is focused on being strategic with his music. He plans to deliver a consistent run of new records and visuals as he continues building his name and defining his sound.
Through it all, Yung ELz gives credit to the people who have been part of the journey. He specifically shouts out his Money 1st team and everyone who has supported the vision, offered advice, showed up or contributed along the way.
