The Story Behind The Image: RO.LEXX’s Journey From Sports To Photography

Growing up in Long Beach, CaliforniaRO.LEXX was surrounded by a family where sports was the foundation. From a young age, she was raised with the mindset of an athlete — putting in the work, staying disciplined, and chasing goals. Competition was part of her everyday life, and those lessons would later become the same foundation she used to build her career behind the camera.

Originally on a path centered around sports, everything changed after an injury caused her to lose a scholarship opportunity. During her senior year of high school, she enrolled in a photography elective class, but what started as just another class quickly turned into something much bigger. Once she began taking the class seriously, she discovered a whole new way to express herself.

Her first real spark came while helping her teacher with a wedding-inspired photoshoot. Being able to capture real moments, emotions, and unexpected details opened her eyes to the power of photography. She fell in love with the process of creating something that could freeze a feeling in time.

Coming from Long Beach and being surrounded by LA culture, RO.LEXX’s early work was heavily influenced by the streets, fashion, and the energy around her. She used friends as her first subjects, capturing the style and personality of the people around her while developing her own creative voice. Her work stood out because it wasn’t just about taking pictures — it was about creating a mood and telling a story.

Known for her eye for texture, color, and lighting, RO.LEXX approaches photography with a unique perspective. Instead of depending on heavy effects, she uses natural elements, shadows, and colors to build emotion within each frame. Her creativity is also heavily inspired by surrealism, bringing dream-like concepts and unexpected visuals into her work. From Salvador Dalí-inspired imagery to cinematic worlds built around artists, she continues to push the boundaries of what photography can be.

A lot of her inspiration comes from her own experiences, emotions, and the world around her. Every image carries a piece of her story, allowing her to connect with people through visuals that feel authentic and memorable.

RO.LEXX’s breakthrough moment came when she captured the now-iconic cover for Bryson Tiller’s “Trapsoul” album, a moment that helped elevate her name and showed the world her creative vision. From there, her career expanded from music photography into global campaigns, brand direction, and cultural storytelling.

Beyond being a photographer, RO.LEXX became a creative force behind the scenes, helping artists build their visual identities and create aesthetics that connect with their fans. Her work has reached some of the biggest names in music and sports, collaborating with artists and athletes including Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, Khalid, Summer Walker, Rosalía, YG, Kobe Bryant, and Odell Beckham Jr.. She has also partnered with major brands including Nike, Jordan Brand, Levi’s, and Adidas.

Today, RO.LEXX represents more than just photography. She creates entire visual worlds — from album covers and editorial shoots to global campaigns and artistic direction. Her journey from a Long Beach athlete who found a camera after a setback to becoming one of the culture’s most respected visual storytellers is proof that sometimes a setback can lead you straight into your purpose.
