Atlanta has produced some of hip-hop’s most influential artists, and Shad Da God is one of the names that helped shape a generation of the city’s music culture. Known for his energetic style, street anthems, and contributions to Atlanta’s evolving rap scene, Shad’s journey began long before the spotlight ever found him.
Born and raised on the Southside of Atlanta in the Old National area, Shad Da God describes his childhood as a fairly normal upbringing. Raised by a hardworking single mother, he says life wasn’t overly difficult, but it wasn’t easy either. His family always had what they needed, and those early years helped build the work ethic and determination that would later fuel his career.
Around the age of 15, Shad says he “jumped off the porch,” beginning to experience the realities of life outside of childhood. Growing up on Atlanta’s Southside exposed him to both opportunities and challenges, experiences that would later influence the music he created.
Music was always part of his life. Long before he stepped into a recording booth as a rapper, he was surrounded by sounds and creativity. His father introduced him to legendary soul artists such as Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield, and Marvin Gaye when he was only four years old. Those timeless records gave him an appreciation for music at an early age and helped shape his ear for melodies and songwriting.
Another major inspiration came from within his own family. Watching his cousin T.I. rise from Atlanta’s streets to become one of hip-hop’s biggest stars showed Shad that success in music was possible. Seeing someone so close to him achieve greatness motivated him to follow a similar path and pursue his own dreams.
With numerous family members involved in the music industry, Shad was constantly surrounded by creativity. Rather than immediately becoming an artist, he first focused on learning the technical side of music. He taught himself audio engineering and spent time understanding how records were made. Looking back, he says it felt like a natural destiny, something he was always meant to do.
Everything changed during his senior year at Douglas High School. That’s when Shad transitioned from working behind the scenes to stepping in front of the microphone. Alongside friends from school, he helped form what would become one of Atlanta’s most influential young rap groups: Rich Kidz.
Founded around 2009, Rich Kidz quickly became a phenomenon in the city. Their first recorded song, “What’s Up,” caught fire almost immediately while the members were still students. What started as a high school project soon turned into a movement.
The group built its reputation through energetic live performances across Atlanta, including popular shows at Metro Skate on Metropolitan Parkway. At a time when it was uncommon for high school students to have thriving rap careers, Rich Kidz broke barriers and inspired countless young artists throughout the city. Shad often reflects on how the group helped create a blueprint for the wave of teenage artists that followed in Atlanta.
As their popularity grew, Rich Kidz became one of the most talked-about groups in the city. However, like many collectives, maintaining unity among multiple members eventually became difficult. Over time, everyone began pursuing their own creative visions, leading the group to separate and focus on individual careers.
For Shad Da God, the split marked the beginning of a new chapter. As a solo artist, he continued building his name with records that connected with fans across Atlanta and beyond. Songs such as Loose Screws, Murder Me, Bankrolls On Deck, and Issa Party showcased his versatility, charisma, and ability to create records that resonated both in the streets and on the scene.
Throughout his career, Shad has collaborated with some of the biggest names in hip-hop, including Gunna, Young Thug, Young Dro, Domani, Oj Da Juiceman, and many others. Those collaborations helped expand his reach while reinforcing his place within Atlanta’s rich musical legacy.
Today, Shad Da God’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and authenticity.
