Born and raised in Louisiana, Gavin Copeland spent the first part of his life surrounded by Southern culture, soul music, and real-life struggle. Before moving to Texas at 15 years old, he grew up in an environment that shaped both his character and his sound. Long before the spotlight found him, music was already part of his everyday life. Gavin says he has been singing since childhood, naturally drawn to melodies and emotion before he even understood what his voice would eventually become.
As a teenager adjusting to life in Texas, Gavin continued chasing music while trying to figure out exactly who he was as an artist. Early on, he leaned toward melodic rap, slowly building a local following and experimenting with different sounds online. Like many young artists, he was searching for direction while balancing everyday life, studio sessions, and time spent around friends and familiar neighborhood hangout spots that kept him grounded through the process.
But everything changed when he stopped trying to force an image and started listening to what came naturally. Around 18 or 19 years old, Gavin discovered the raw, growling vocal tone that would later separate him from everyone else. The sound was authentic, emotional, and impossible to fake. Influenced by legendary soul artists like Louis Armstrong and Al Green, while also inspired by modern artists like Teddy Swims, Gavin began blending old-school soul with Southern pain and modern storytelling.
One of the biggest turning points in his life came through both love and loss. His girlfriend encouraged him to fully embrace his singing voice instead of staying boxed into melodic rap. At the same time, the memory of his late brother, Dre, continued pushing him forward. Gavin openly shares that Dre constantly told him to stop hiding his gift and show the world what God gave him. After Dre passed away, those words stayed with him. Gavin decided to start posting singing videos online, and not long after, one of those moments turned into his first million-view TikTok video.
That breakthrough changed everything.
What started as cover songs on TikTok quickly evolved into a growing fanbase that connected deeply with his honesty and pain-filled delivery. Viral records like “Blood in the Water” and “Photo Coupe” helped introduce his sound to a much wider audience, proving that his voice carried something people could feel, not just hear.
As his buzz continued growing, Gavin built relationships with artists across the industry, collaborating with names like Pressa, BigXthaPlug, and OC Chris. He also spoke highly about receiving recognition from That Mexican OT, a moment that showed how respected his artistry was becoming among his peers.
Despite the rising attention, Gavin remains heavily focused on the work itself. Inside the studio, he approaches music with discipline and purpose. He emphasizes protecting his voice, paying close attention to quality control, and building alongside his team, the Big Bag Runners (BBR). For Gavin, recording is not just about making songs — it is about creating music that people can heal through.
That purpose is felt all throughout his latest EP, Soul Cries From Texas. The five-track project captures the emotion, struggle, and spiritual growth behind his journey so far. Featuring appearances from OC Chris, Mac-K the K Baby, and Loudpacktrey, the project continues showcasing the soulful direction that has become his signature. One standout record, “Black Smoke,” delivers the same pain, honesty, and vocal intensity that fans have connected with since day one.
