The Game is back with his highly anticipated album “The Documentary III,” now available on all streaming platforms.
The 24-track project is loaded with big names, bringing together a long list of artists from different generations and different parts of the culture. The features include Snoop Dogg, Sele V, Cool & Dre, Lil Wayne, RJMrLA, LIT PAPI, BG 100, Wacko, Eastside K-Boy, Almighty Joey, HopOut, Drake, Leon Thomas, Drakeo the Ruler, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Kalan FrFr, ArmonieJAY, Tyga, Lefty Gunplay, YG, Mark Lux, JasonMartin, E-40, Serrin Joy, Marsha Ambrosius, Black Thought, Larry June, and Kanye West.
You may ask, what’s the reason for all the features?
As Game said, if you’re throwing a party and you’ve got famous friends, why not invite them to the party?
And that pretty much sums up the energy behind the album.
The opening track starts with a clip from The Breakfast Club asking the question, “What do we think of The Game, as an artist?” From there, Game immediately gets to work, talking his talk and reminding listeners why he has remained one of the West Coast’s most respected emcees. He even taps into a flow pattern reminiscent of the classic Twista and Kanye West record “Overnight Celebrity.”
Track two, “Love It or Hate It,” brings a heavy dose of nostalgia, feeling like a new chapter to one of Game’s biggest records, “Hate It or Love It.”
On track three, “Steppers,” Game and Lil Wayne go back and forth with a record made for the streets.
One of my personal favorite records is track nine, “Geekin,” featuring Drakeo the Ruler. It’s another standout moment that brings together Game’s West Coast sound with Drakeo’s unmistakable style.
Throughout the album, Game continues to showcase why he’s one of the West Coast’s best emcees. The project carries that heavy West Coast classic sound while still giving Game room to show his versatility and ability to move with different sounds, artists and generations.
Key records like “LA Monster,” “BABY,” “Party At Game’s,” and “The Cookout” add even more to the experience.
The production is just as stacked as the features. “The Documentary III” features production from Tommy Brown, Buci, Cool & Dre, Cu Beats, Sndtrak, Beatbutcha, Statik Selektah, Conductor Williams, Big Duke, Coleman, AzizTheShake, Mike & Keys, Manesh, Phonix Beats, Titus Johnson, Donut, Dre, Axl Folie, Nile Harbor, Ye, Traxster, Treyvonce, Sela V, FBG Goat, Jet Stanley, Maxwell BAE Seay, Roccstar, JasonMartin, Papatinho, Bangladesh, London On Da Track, Tee Mobil, TheLite Blindside, and Marlena Kral.
At certain points, it feels like Game is having a conversation with his younger self, reflecting on where he came from and everything he has experienced along the way. That feeling hits especially hard on the final track, “Game Recognize Game.”
24 tracks later, Game makes it clear that he still has plenty to say.
“The Documentary III” is a celebration of Game’s legacy, his city, his West Coast roots and the relationships he has built throughout his career.
