The Artist Connect Presents: The Story Behind RichType

Emerging from a musical background connected to New Orleans, Louisiana, Houston, and Atlanta, RichType has always had a natural connection to music. By the age of three, he was already recognizing melodies and sounds that caught his attention. By seven, he was experimenting with musical structure and beginning to develop his skills as a musician.

Growing up, RichType spent time playing the trumpet at local parks, buying CDs from music stores, hanging out at the mall, and grabbing food at Raising Cane’s. These everyday experiences, combined with Louisiana’s rich musical culture, helped shape his creative perspective and appreciation for different sounds.

His musical influences included Kanye West, UGK, Snoop Dogg, and Big Pun. From Kanye’s creative production to UGK’s Southern identity and Big Pun’s lyrical ability, each artist introduced him to different elements of the culture. Rather than simply following their footsteps, RichType took those influences and began developing a musical identity of his own.

His journey, however, hasn’t been easy. Facing financial hardships, difficult circumstances, and periods of having to start over, RichType has experienced what it means to rebuild his life more than once. Through those challenges, music remained a constant, giving him something to hold on to while he continued working toward his goals.

While balancing a traditional 9-to-5 job with his music career, the daily grind and frustration with the system inspired his September 2025 breakout single, “Dumbass Jobs.” Remaining independent, he has continued to navigate the music industry without the financial backing of a major label. His journey also included personal challenges at Texas Southern University, where he faced intense opposition from new Ocean of Soul marching band directors in 2021. Despite these obstacles, he continued pushing forward and pursuing his own path.

Today, RichType describes his sound as B.R.A.P., short for Brass Rap—a creative blend of brass instrumentation, hip-hop, jazz, classical orchestration, and soulful R&B. Connecting Louisiana’s musical heritage with contemporary hip-hop, he aims to bring something distinctive to the culture while building a movement known as The RichType Army.

Working independently from both home and professional studios, he continues to develop his catalog while maintaining creative control over his music and direction. His recent releases include “They All On My Six,” “Fight Back,” “Rewind Dat Back,” and “I’m Still Trippin.” Among them, “They All On My Six” has gained organic attention through social media, accumulating a combined one million views.

With a sound rooted in musical tradition but driven by his own imagination, RichType is focused on expanding his reach and introducing B.R.A.P. to audiences around the world. His journey is a reminder that even when life forces you to start over, your purpose can remain the same.
