Nisha: Writing, Producing, and Shaping Her Own Lane from the Bay

Growing up in the Bay Area, Nisha was raised in a tight-knit household alongside her three siblings by immigrant parents who valued hard work and creativity. Music was always part of the atmosphere at home. Her father, who once enjoyed singing and recording in his younger years, unknowingly planted the seed that would grow into Nisha’s lifelong love for music.

From an early age, singing felt natural to her. By middle school, she joined choir and continued throughout high school, eventually becoming part of her school’s women’s chamber ensemble. The experience helped shape her musical foundation. She learned to sing in multiple languages, studied complex music theory, and competed at festivals—all while strengthening her voice and confidence as a performer.

Growing up, Nisha listened to all kinds of music. Her curiosity for sound had no boundaries. But one artist stood above the rest as her biggest inspiration: Michael Jackson. His star power, artistry, and presence left a lasting impression on her and fueled her desire to create music that connects with people.

At 15, Nisha began writing her own songs. She studied song structure closely and listened to some of the greatest artists to understand how timeless records were made. A year later, she met a classmate who knew how to produce music and offered to help bring her songs to life. At the time, Nisha was writing everything on a keyboard and carefully mapping out her ideas through sheet music.

When her classmate asked for the chords to one of her songs, he admitted he didn’t know how to read sheet music. Instead, he sent her screenshots of his music software. Determined to make it work, Nisha printed the images, drew out the digital workstation by hand on printer paper, and even colored in the MIDI notes with colored pencils so he could understand her vision.

He created the beat—but it still wasn’t quite what she imagined.

That moment changed everything.

Realizing she could take control of her own sound, Nisha opened her dad’s old iMac, launched GarageBand ’08, and began placing the notes herself. That decision marked the beginning of her journey as a producer. She taught herself by experimenting and exploring the software, learning through trial and error rather than tutorials. Eventually she upgraded to Logic, the program she still uses today.

Interestingly, much of her music has been recorded in an unconventional place: her car. Using a small USB microphone plugged directly into her phone, Nisha records her vocals herself and then sends the stems to her engineer. It’s a simple setup, but one that allows her to capture ideas whenever inspiration strikes.

Today, Nisha describes her sound as feminine, sweet, and confident. She has a deep love for romantic songs but also feels strongly connected to the unmistakable rhythm and bounce of West Coast music. Blending those two worlds together has allowed her to create a style that feels authentic to who she is—both as an artist and as someone proud of her California roots.

Outside of music, some of her favorite memories growing up involve spending time in the city with her family. Weekend trips often meant visiting Mitchell’s Ice Cream, exploring Golden Gate Park, or shopping around Hillsdale Shopping Center. She also enjoyed spending time in downtown San Mateo and strolling along Burlingame Avenue—moments that helped shape her connection to the Bay.

Now, Nisha is continuing to build her catalog with new music. Her latest release is a six-song EP titled CHERRY ON TOP, which she produced herself. The project captures her vision of sweet, flirty love songs layered over that signature West Coast bounce—perfect for late-night drives or sunny California afternoons. The EP also features collaborations with several fellow California artists who are part of her creative circle.

Alongside the EP, she recently released a single titled “LOVER” with her friend Dom Cruz and is currently working on new singles as well as another upcoming project.

For Nisha, music has always been about passion, creativity, and staying true to where she comes from. From hand-drawing beats on paper to producing full records herself, her journey reflects a dedication to learning, evolving, and creating music that feels as genuine as the place that raised her.
