Raised on Faith and Family: The Journey of Cherelle B

Hailing from Jersey City, New Jersey, Cherelle B brings passion, authenticity, and real-life experiences into every record she creates. Her journey is one built on family values, personal growth, and lessons learned from living in two very different worlds.

Growing up, Cherelle’s life changed when she relocated from New Jersey to South Carolina. The transition wasn’t easy. She went from the fast-paced environment of city life—street lights, loud neighborhoods, walking everywhere, and easy access to corner stores—to a slower, more family-oriented way of living in the South.

At first, the change was intimidating, but it quickly became one of the most important chapters of her life. South Carolina introduced her to a different sense of community. She remembers stepping outside to fresh air, watching her grandmother, aunts, and uncles sitting on the porch sharing stories, and enjoying breakfasts made with love. She laughs when recalling clothes hanging on the clothesline—fresh but sometimes a little stiff. Fresh fruit, watermelon on warm days, and running barefoot outside became some of her favorite childhood memories.

As the oldest sibling, Cherelle carried responsibilities that many children her age didn’t fully understand. She often felt like a second mother, wanting to be a positive example for her younger siblings. That responsibility helped shape her into someone strong, protective, and determined. While her childhood was filled with fun memories, it also came with challenges that taught her valuable life lessons.

One of the biggest influences in her life has always been her grandmother. Cherelle describes her as a hardworking, God-fearing woman with a great sense of humor who always found a way to make things happen regardless of the circumstances. Alongside her grandmother, her aunts and uncles played major roles in her upbringing. One aunt became like a second mother, while an uncle stepped into a fatherly role that helped guide her through life.

Family was always at the center of everything. She grew up alongside cousins who felt more like brothers and sisters. Together they created dance routines, participated on drill teams, sang in church choirs, and built memories that still stay with her today. Her mother also played a significant role in shaping her mindset. She taught Cherelle to be strong, confident, and never allow anyone to take advantage of her. Her mother also wrote meaningful poetry, something that would later inspire Cherelle’s own creative expression.

Music entered her life early. By the age of 13, she could often be found standing in front of a mirror with a hairbrush in hand, pretending it was a microphone. What started as a childhood dream eventually became a real passion.

Growing up, she found inspiration in artists who weren’t afraid to be themselves. Names like Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim, Eve, Jay-Z, and Nas helped shape her appreciation for confidence, storytelling, originality, and authenticity. Those influences can still be heard in her music today.

Cherelle describes her sound as passionate, aggressive, humble, and authentic. She creates music that reflects her experiences while remaining true to who she is. Rather than following trends, she focuses on delivering records that come from a genuine place.

Throughout her career, she has worked in various recording studios, continuing to sharpen her craft and develop her sound. Every session has helped her grow as an artist and storyteller.

When she thinks back on her younger years, some of her favorite hangout spots were simple places that meant the most. Spending time at her grandmother’s store, shooting pool, and playing basketball created memories that still inspire her today. Basketball was another major part of her childhood, and she admits she was talented enough to potentially take the sport further. Looking back, it’s one of the few things she wishes she had pursued more seriously.

Today, Cherelle B continues to build her legacy through music. Her recent release, “WoodSpring Mood,” showcases her passion and commitment to her craft while giving listeners another glimpse into her creative world.

Above all else, Cherelle remains grounded in faith. When asked who she wants to thank for helping her along the journey, her answer is simple and direct:

God.
