The Artist Connect Presents: The Story Of YvNv

For YvNv, music has been part of her life for as long as she can remember. Raised in a gospel-oriented family through the influence of her grandparents and their churches, she spent much of his childhood singing in the choir and learning instruments whenever she was needed. Without realizing it, those early experiences taught him melodies, harmonies, rhythm, and how different sounds work together.

At home, she was exposed to another side of music. Her father played street rap and older R&B, while her mother introduced her to alternative music and R&B. Growing up between Tacoma and Florida gave her even more influences, blending the Northwest, the South, gospel, R&B, and hip-hop into the sound she would eventually develop.

Her upbringing wasn’t always easy. YvNv experienced loss, instability, and moments of having more or having less. Those experiences pushed her to grow up quickly and became a major part of why she uses music to express what she can’t always say in conversation. Her music gives all those different parts of his life somewhere to exist.

Unlike many artists who spent their childhood outside at neighborhood spots, YvNv was more of a homebody. Home, family, church, and music were where she spent most of her time. That time alone gave her space to listen, write, think, and develop creatively.

One of her biggest musical influences is J. Cole. YvNv connected with Cole’s ability to paint pictures through his words and bring real value and storytelling into his music. That influence helped shape YvNv into what she calls a “hood poet” — a storyteller who can blend melody with honesty.

Her sound pulls from everything she grew up around. Gospel and R&B gave her the ear for melody, her father’s music gave her rawness, her mother’s taste added another layer of musicality, and Florida brought Southern influence into his delivery.

YvNv has also taken control of the technical side of his craft. Shelearned Pro Tools, developed her own vocal chains, and became more involved in the recording process. Alongside her uncle, she helped build Safe Space Sound, creating an environment where artists can feel comfortable developing their sound.

Her latest release, “Commodity,” reflects where she is today. The record is centered around knowing her value and speaking the future she wants into existence. YvNv calls it manifestation music, and watching some of those things begin to happen in real life has made the record even more meaningful.

Now she’s preparing to show more sides of himself with “Down W/ You” and “Conundrum.” “Down W/ You” leans into her melodic R&B side, while “Conundrum” represents her manifestation-driven approach. Together, the records show the range behind YvNv without losing the identity that makes his music personal.

Through it all, YvNv gives credit to her girl, her family, producer KmaR, and manager Toni for helping her move forward. Their support has helped her stay focused while building the next chapter of his career.

YvNv isn’t trying to fit neatly into one category. She’s a rapper, singer, storyteller, and, in her own words, a hood poet. Most importantly, she’s an artist turning her experiences, influences, and vision for the future into music that sounds like her.
