From the heart of South Central Los Angeles, Donny Loc is one of the city’s emerging voices, representing the culture and sound that raised him. Born and raised off Western Avenue, music has always been a part of his life. Long before he stepped into a real studio, he was already finding ways to express himself through rap.
In the third grade, Donny Loc spent his time in class writing raps instead of paying attention. His passion was so real that he was once suspended for writing lyrics filled with curse words. Looking back, it was an early sign of where his creativity was headed. While music was always something he enjoyed, it wasn’t until around the age of 15 that he decided to take it seriously.
His biggest inspirations came from close to home. His older cousin, Macc Grams, showed him what was possible, while Los Angeles legend Nipsey Hussle motivated him to stay authentic and represent where he came from.
As he got older, Donny Loc’s house became known as “Notch House,” short for Top Notch House. It became the neighborhood hangout where friends would come together to pregame, laugh, make memories, and enjoy life. It was also where he and his brother built an in-home recording studio from scratch. They didn’t have much, but they made it work. A sock held the microphone in place, and a clothes hanger became the pop filter. It wasn’t perfect, but it gave Donny Loc a place to sharpen his craft.
Eventually, he began recording at MNS Danks Studio in Watts, California, where many of the records fans know today were created. Those experiences, from the homemade studio to the professional sessions, helped shape the artist he has become.
Everything about Donny Loc reflects Los Angeles. From his cadence and flow to his beat selection and the way he carries himself, he embodies the authentic South Central sound. He’s become a respected name across the West Coast and continues to build his legacy one record at a time.
